Several years ago I found myself working in an almost toxic environment. (You can read more on my personal story here.) As I watched my co-workers drowning in their desperation to find other opportunities and make sense of a crazy work environment, I felt myself sliding down the rabbit hole of depression. It spilled over into my personal life as well and began to permeate every aspect of my life. I didn’t know what to do about it, but I knew that I had to do something. I’d always been a pretty happy person. I was not going out like that!
That something I had to do wound up having nothing to do with finding a new job right away or moving to Bermuda and living on the beach. (Although, I did eventually move closer to the beach.)
What I did was change my mindset to deal with circumstances as they were, while planning for better circumstances to come. Sound difficult? It was a lot easier than you think! And the best part is that after I figured out what to do, I wrote it all down in my Blueprint for Happiness so others could learn too.
The most important thing I learned was that my mindset was what mattered most. As I shifted my thoughts and behaviors and focused more on the joy I could find in each moment as well as how I would like things to be better, the better things got for me. Eventually, I realized I needed to move on from that job and situation, and I did. However, when I finally made my move, it was because I intended to move towards something that brought me joy, not away from something that made me unhappy. That was the shift.
